About the Author

(Johnathan) Pen-Lei Hou is a Chinese American scholar who has lived in the United States for more than 50 years. Born in China and raised in Taiwan, he received his education in both Taiwan and America, giving him a deeply bicultural perspective. His lifelong observation of behavioral differences between Asian Americans and Caucasian Americans prompted this extensive comparative study of Eastern and Western civilizations. Drawing on his personal experiences navigating both Confucian and capitalist cultures, Hou brings a unique insider-outsider perspective to his analysis of how philosophical and religious traditions shape human behavior, social structures, and cross-cultural interactions across millennia.
